The Most Powerful Nutrition Tip You Often Miss Or Ignore

"treat meals"

Let’s talk about treat foods.

Rewards.

Indulgences.

Comfort foods.

Carbs. The really naughty-yummy-guilt-inducing-ones. Sugar and spice and all things nice.

Tell me –

How often do you allow yourself to enjoy these indulgent treat foods?

I don’t mean how often do you actually eat them, exactly. It’s a slightly different question.

I mean how often do you really truly enjoy, savour, revel in eating those delicious things that you normally know you ‘shouldn’t’?

Do you ever?

a little story about dieting; what works and what is plain stupid

I had this incredible breakthrough around my money and spending habits this morning. It seriously blew me away.

When it comes to me and money, I tend to have 2 speeds only. Go or no.

Meaning, that most of the time I don’t spend money on myself at ALL, well, unless it is on good food or supplements :). I’ll spend money on my daughter and on my business but on me? No. Not necessary, I think. I’m fine. I have clothes that fit, I have a few nice handbags and decent jewellery; what else do I need?

The only problem is that when I GO oh boy do I go.

I remember being away at Easter this year, shopping with my sister-in-law and I literally spent nearly $800 in a store in 10 minutes. She was looking at me like I was crazy; I was just grabbing everything that I even half liked in the store and barely even trying it on.

And I kind of knew I was going a bit nuts, but as I said to her –

“I hardly ever spend money on myself. Like maybe twice a year. So all I’m doing is my ‘6-month’ shop; most people I know would easily spend $800 on clothes in 6 months right?”

That theory has always made total sense to me. And yet … whenever I do spend money on myself I feel incredibly guilty. And I feel like a rolling ball gathering speed, like I might not be able to stop. Long story short, I feel like I can’t be responsible spending any money on myself ‘just because’ or for frivolity and so it’s better not to do it at all rather than to just start and then keep going … and going … and going …

And until my coaching call this morning on which I had my breakthrough it has never hit me that what I have been doing is basically rigidly dieting with my finances and then binge spending like an out-of-control emotional eater.

Now that I see it that way – and I can’t help but not – I just think how freaking ridiculous I’ve been!

By trying to be strict and ‘good’, by saying ‘I’m fine’ and ‘I don’t need it’, I’ve set myself up for binge spending. I’ve believed that I don’t deserve to ‘indulge’ regularly and that belief has caused me to completely breakdown sporadically each year, before going back to the restrictive habits that I think will save me.

To top it off, not only does a typical binge spend set me back financially, but it doesn’t even make me feel good and most of the time I end up buying crap I don’t need or even really want!

the most powerful nutrition tip you often miss or ignore

I don’t have to tell you really, do I? I will anyway 🙂

Think about this.

Is it really so healthy to classify certain foods – or behaviours – as indulgent? As treat or cheat items? As naughty even?

Doesn’t it just reinforce guilt, shoulds, musts, fears?

Isn’t it true that by telling yourself you can’t do something – even by telling yourself that you don’t need it; that you’re fine – that you just set yourself up for eventual breakdown?

Are you one of those women who would say to me (and I hear this a lot) –

“But I’m better without treat meals. I don’t really need it. I love eating clean, I’m fine. Beside, once I start I seem to just keep going all night or all weekend.”

hmmmm.

When it comes to my spending habits, I realise it is absolutely time to loosen the reigns. To give myself permission to spend some money on myself ‘just because’. Not as a ‘reward’ or a treat or exception but just because I am worth it.

And you – you’re worth it too. You know that, don’t you?

You’re worth having a little of what you fancy. Just because.

You’re worth spending some money on yourself. Just because.

You’re worth letting go of the rules and rigidity and above all else letting go of the FEAR. Just because otherwise, what is it all for really?

Would you rather to stay bound in structure, scared that if you loosen up you’ll lose all control, or would you rather gain the ultimate control by knowing that anytime you really DO feel like having that special food or spending a few bucks on yourself, it’s not a big deal?

And that there’s no need to keep going and going and going, because it’s not as though you have to be super-strict again the next day.

I know what my plan is from here on out.

From here on, I choose to no longer play with guilt.

I choose to be fine with buying myself nice things just because.

I choose to give myself permission to throw out the rule book and trust that I will do the right thing by myself in the end. Trust that I can live without rigidity. Without fear. And ultimately without the spending diet-binge yoyo.
