When Will it Be ‘One Day’?

When you don’t allow yourself to be who you’d really be “one day, when”, it’s like telling God or the Universe you don’t want any loving.

“No thanks!”, you’re saying –

“I’m not so sure I really deserve to live that life; the one where I get to create my art, play with my kids, lay on my back and stare at the clouds. The one where I get to just BE and to have fun doing so. I haven’t done what I need to do yet!”

But here’s the thing –

(And seriously, answer this)

Will you EVER have?

Can I tell you a secret? It’s one I’ve said before, many times. But maybe you missed it.

[pq] You’re going to die and your to-do list will still not be done. [/pq]

Do you get that?

And if you do, then go a bit further with this honesty thing and tell me –

What are you really striving for right now?

What are you pushing yourself for?

What are you quite literally, not to mention emotionally, giving your very LIFE for?

And is it more important than the stuff you’ll do “one day, when”?

Will you get to the end of this year and be so glad you gave your focus, your time, your emotion, your very ‘you’ to staying on top of your list (or trying to, ’cause let’s face it, you never really DO get on top of it!)

Will you be so damn glad you did that instead of taking time to create the art you want, to be silly and frivolous and really just BE there each day with your kids, to laugh and joke with your partner like you used to before your life became So Busy and Important, to lie still in a field or on the beach and just drift away into nothing-ness, to really have a crack at following your big life dreams even though it’s impossible to see how or if or when they might pay off and even though the ‘smart’ thing to do would be to use that time on Important Things That Must Be Done?

Will you?

If you’re squirming a little and thinking that no, actually, you don’t know that you will be happy to feel that you pressed pause all year on the life you really want, then you’ll forgive me for saying what I really want to say, which is this –

It’s not just this year that we’re talking about, is it?

It’s your LIFE baby.

And this, this right now, right here is the very essence of your life. This is a moment. You’re creating it. You’re living it. Are you happy with where it just went? Because it’s gone now, poof. It’s dead.

And your life, the stuff you look back on and think, hopefully, “WOW”, it’s just a collection of little moments. Everyone of them an ordinary little moment just like this one.

You don’t have a choice here, not really, do you?

If you want to live a life you love and go to bed each night truly feeling that you ‘pressed play’, you have to do it now. Life is now. Now now now now now! Not when you have time. Not when you’re ready. Not when the stars and moon are aligned and an angel floats down from heaven with a missive to tell you it’s time.

Now.

It’s all you’ve got honey.

So by all means, push on the things you want to push on. Make sacrifices. Do the work. Overcome your doubt and fear.

But for the love of God, make sure you’re doing that stuff for an endeavour that truly matters to you deep within.

And in the process of achieving your big dreams, make sure you don’t forget the everyday little dreams, because those are the ones you really never can get back.

The smiles and laughter with people you love.

The pauses between the busy-work, to just be, to enjoy life and maybe even contemplate a little.

Watching the sun rise, or set.

Having coffee and watching the world go by.

Creating special memories.

Trying new things, taking up those almost-forgotten hobby ideas just for FUN. Heaven forbid you should do something you don’t have to do, right?!

And if need be, disrupting your life in a bigger way.

Quitting the 9-5.

Walking out of the relationship; the friendship.

Letting other people down to let your own dreams rise up.

Maybe even shutting down your business in order to make space for the right one.

Doing what you need to do, to live that “one day, when” life right now.

Because the truth, whether you like it or not – and I hope that you do like it because it’s really quite thrilling, I think! – is that this right here IS your “one day, when”. And it’s time to start acting like you know that.
